Chapter Seven

A young blond man stood behind a soundboard, laughing and egging Austin on. Blondie caught sight of them at the entrance and waved enthusiastically. Austin spun around and predictably tripped on his own feet. Beau lurched forward in a vain attempt to get to Austin before he crashed to the ground, but didn’t quite make it. Austin managed to grab one of the folding chairs but only succeeded in bringing it down with him.

Beau crouched down next to him, fear knotting his stomach. “Did you hit your head?”

Austin gaped at Beau from his position lying flat on the linoleum floor, as if he was an apparition.

“Austin. Answer me.”

“No. My head’s fine. I… You… What are you doing here?”

Thankfully, the blond had turned off the blasting music.

“I came over here with Lonnie and Parker. Lonnie’s volunteering to help with the party.”

As if in confirmation, Beau’s friends gathered around, peering down at Austin.

“Oh, now I get it.” Lonnie smacked Beau’s arm. “This is who you meant.”

Beau’s face heated. He could see a look of confused hurt in Austin’s eyes and he was anxious to get him alone as soon as possible to explain. Austin propped himself up on his elbows then cried out, grabbing the one he’d injured when he’d tumbled out of Beau’s car.

He could see why Austin kept such a large supply of bandages in the closet. However, he seemed relatively unscathed from his current accident.

“Let me help you. Come on.”

Beau reached down, noting the short pause before Austin accepted his help. Once he stood, he wouldn’t meet Beau’s gaze, trying to pull his hand away. Beau kept his grip strong, using his other hand to snake around Austin’s waist. He didn’t care if Parker and Lonnie saw—he wasn’t going to be ashamed of someone he’d so obviously misjudged as being shallow and self-involved. Beau was only ashamed of himself.

“C’mere.”

Austin turned his head to face Beau, his brow furrowed. Beau captured his mouth in a sweet but sincere kiss, leaving no doubt as to what they were to each other. Austin relaxed under his hold. Beau broke the connection first, but only because he was still worried about the fall Austin had taken.

“Are you sure you’re okay? Let me see your elbow.”

Austin resisted, but not enough that Beau couldn’t get him to cooperate.

“I’m fine. Really.” His tone was filled with humiliation.

“Austin. Don’t argue with me. I want to make sure you’re all right.”

“Jesus, this is so embarrassing. I’m such an idiot.”

Lonnie chuckled. “You were right, Beau. He does do the same thing as me. Damn, Austin, Parker was just getting on me for that. I was saying I was stupid back in the car.”

Being surrounded by so many unexpected people seemed to have completely overwhelmed Austin. He darted his eyes between all of them as if trying to process what was happening. Although, Beau noted with relief that Austin had leaned into his side and was no longer trying to pull away from him.

The blond bounced over to them and introduced himself as Rich.
